Hot Docs is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing and celebrating the art of documentary and to creating production opportunities for documentary filmmakers.

Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, North America's largest documentary festival, conference and market, will present its 31st annual edition from April 25 to May 5, 2024.

Year-round, Hot Docs supports the Canadian and international industry with professional development programs and a multi-million-dollar production fund portfolio, and fosters education through documentaries with its popular free program Docs For Schools.

Hot Docs also owns and programs the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema, a century-old landmark located in Toronto's Annex neighbourhood and the world's first and largest documentary cinema.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Senior Manager, Industry Programs is responsible for managing the operations of the Hot Docs Industry Programs department and professional opportunities for Hot Docs Fellows and Alumni. Working closely with the Director of Industry Programs, the Senior Manager will be responsible for festival market programs, Hot Docs Productions activities, contributing to year-round projects and programs that engage professional development, market opportunities, and support creators within the documentary community. Additionally, the Senior Manager supports oversight of the Hot Docs portfolio of fund and labs programs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manages projects across all Hot Docs Industry Programs, festival market events, year-round professional development, Hot Docs Productions, special projects and support of funds and labs;
  • Acts as an advisor on industry trends in the documentary market, distribution, curation, policy and procedures;
  • Manages and facilitates the department functioning, critical path planning, interdepartmental meetings, file maintenance, shared drive maintenance and general continuity of administration;
  • Key liaison of international and domestic festival/market outreach for collaboration and participation;
  • In conjunction with Development department, activates components for all international delegations attending Hot Docs and export programs;
  • Contributes conference programming themes, ideas, and speakers;
  • Outreach and engagement for year-round decision maker outreach and cultivation;
  • Supports Director of Industry Programs in business development, launching new programs and partnerships;
  • Supports Hot Docs Partners reporting, pipeline development, and cultivation management;
  • Oversees Industry alumni project reporting and industry promotional story sites;
  • Wraps outstanding projects working with team to deliver on project objectives;
  • Participates in application dossier reviews, including but not limited to: analyzing eligibility and ensuring projects or candidates satisfy fund requirements, evaluating financial and production viability, focusing on due diligence of business affairs, and determining risk factors and making recommendations to the adjudication;
  • Acts as the primary point of communication for all applicants, fellows, and alumni, and works to provide tailored artist services to Hot Docs Alumni;
  • Supports Hot Docs Funds portfolio in collaboration with Hot Docs Funds & Labs Programmer;
  • Collaborates closely with the Director of Industry Programs to strategize, design, schedule, and execute industry programming with a focus on enhancing operational efficiencies and maximizing impact;
  • Collaborates closely with the Director of Industry Programs on our international sector initiatives for institutional partners. This includes developing and implementing support training programs, managing participant invitations, coordinating reading and selection committees, securing guest speakers and mentors, and overseeing project budgets;
  • Builds and bolsters strategic relationships and partnerships with domestic and international markets, festivals, co-producers, creators, buyers, and contributors about the ongoing relevance and efficiency of the Hot Docs' industry professional development and market activities;
  • Delivers annual reporting of key Industry Programs projects and programs, and maintains up-to-date records of all programs and activities, promotional story sites, and presentation decks;
  • Delivers and facilitates workshops and labs at Hot Docs and other festival and markets;
  • Represents Hot Docs at major national and international events, leads delegations, and speaks at conferences on behalf of Hot Docs;
  • Other various duties as required.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • 5-7 years of experience in the film industry, preferably within documentary filmmaking, film festival management, or related fields;
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field is preferred (e.g. Film Studies, Arts Administration, Business Administration, etc.);
  • Proven track record in project management, event facilitation, festival management and relationship building within the documentary community;
  • Knowledge of Canadian and international film landscapes with a working knowledge of trends, key players, how content is funded as well as practices and regulations in film production;
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities with experience in facilitating department functioning, critical path planning, and interdepartmental meetings;
  • Strong networking skills with the ability to engage decision makers and cultivate partnerships;
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills with an understanding of how to liaise and build strategic relationships with experts within different spectrums;
  • Experience producing and facilitating workshops/sessions/educational events considered an asset;
  • Exceptionally strong administrative and organizational skills with keen attention to detail and ability to manage large amounts of data;
  • Effective problem-solving skills and ability to make judgment calls under pressure;
  • Proficiency in analyzing application dossiers, ensuring alignment with fund requirements, evaluating financial and production viability, and determining risk factors;
  • Passionate about documentaries and the organization as a whole;
  • Proven team player who is both flexible and adaptable;
  • Available to work some evenings and weekends, and availability to work in-person;
  • Strong proficiency in MS Programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), PC operating system;
  • Experience with Salesforce or other database systems is an asset;
  • Must be available to perform on-site duties in Toronto as requested;
  • Bilingualism in French is considered an asset.
