Afghanistan suddenly became the focus of attention around the world after 9/11. A nation already enmeshed in a deadly civil war found itself under renewed assault from U.S. sponsored ‘liberation’ forces. As the Taliban fought hard to maintain control of the country, the number of civilian war victims mounted. Lazzaretti, Petitto and Vendemmiati, the acclaimed film crew that made Jung (War) in the Land of the Mujaheddin, a huge success at Hot Docs 2001, returned to Afghanistan to once again document the efforts of surgeon Gino Strada, medical coordinator Kate Rowlands and the Emergency human rights group to alleviate personal suffering. This is a moving, socially engaged film, ripped from the headlines of press agencies throughout the globe. Marc Glassman.
