An award winner at the 2002 Berlin Film Festival, this film is an intimate look at Esben, a 52 year-old eye doctor who has two children, a middle-class lifestyle and a good relationship with his second wife, Elsa. We soon realize why he is married for the second time and the reason for his son making this film: Esben is also Esther, a chic transvestite. Using lots of home movie footage, Even, Esben’s filmmaking son, traces the tale of his cross-dressing dad, from his unsuccessful marriage to Liv, difficult relationship with Elisabeth, his daughter, through to his second marriage. The film is unashamedly willing to deal with philosophical and emotional material, and thus questions of the body and gender are nicely handled. At its core, All About my Father is really about two people: Esben, an attractive, articulate individual who is not finished making his personal changes and Even, his more conservative and wounded son, still unhappy about his dad's lifestyle decisions. Marc Glassman. In Norwegian with English subtitles.
