Baria is like any other teenager growing up in the West. Born and raised in Marseilles to immigrant parents, she fills her days with high school, shopping for clothes, going dancing or just hangin’ with friends. At 17, however, her life is about to undergo a dramatic change. Baria’s parents are from The Comoros, a group of islands in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of Mozambique. According to her family’s cultural traditions, she is destined to wed a young man from the islands in a pre-arranged marriage. The film follows Baria in the months leading up to her wedding, as she travels from France to The Comoros, meets her fiancée, Maoulida, and prepares for the big event. Transplanted from her adopted land, Baria is caught between two worlds. Karen Tisch. In French with English subtitles.
