While the ongoing war in Iraq consumes vast amounts of media airtime, very few representations of life in that country escape the polemics of winning hearts and minds. Piercing this media fog, Guerilla Network News co-founder Stephen Marshall spent three weeks on the ground in Iraq to document the everyday lives of Iraqis and U.S. soldiers. At the centre of this insightful documentary is Farhan, a victim of Saddam Hussein’s torture who was rescued and relocated to the U.S. after the first Gulf War, now returning to Iraq to be reunited with his family. Farhan’s tears of joy are mixed with the horror of witnessing the devastation of his country. Marshall’s multi-perspective narrative goes on to document the experiences of an Iraqi activist warning of widespread uranium contamination, a council of village elders negotiating with U.S. troops for the return of their water, a U.S. serviceman who blithely announces that the war is about the triumph of capitalism, and an Iraqi translator who despises all things American. A crucial document of the human costs of war. David McIntosh
