This strange and evocative profile of a woman in search of some sexual truths offers more than meets the eye. The daughter of a Finnish sculptress and a Russian prince, Eva Norvind has been, among other things, a call girl to Mexican politicians, an infamous New York dominatrix, a photographer, writer, beauty pageant winner, and unwitting smuggler of televisions. Now in her fifties, and looking nothing like the B-movie starlet she also once was, Norvind is studying forensic psychology. What makes Monica Treut’s documentary so important is the way Norvind, a sympathetic yet overbearing personality, exposes herself throughout the film as she struggles with her desire to transcend the sexual hypocrisy that surrounds her. She’s an unusual character in her passion and drive to explore the darker sides of sexuality, to say nothing of the public ways she carries out these explorations, but her dilemma - her desire to feel OK with herself and her actions - is familiar and human.
