Each year Hot Docs audiences vote to honour their favourite film with the People’s Choice Award. As great an accolade as this is, the award has never included a cash prize… until now.
This year, you – our audience – can not only vote for winner of the People’s Choice Award, you can also contribute to its first-ever cash prize.
THE GOAL: To reward the filmmaker of the Festival favourite with a $3000 cash prize to recognize their outstanding work and contribute to the development of their next project. 100% of the funds raised will go directly to the winning filmmakers.
WHY THIS PROJECT?
We are often asked, “Why is there a speech bubble in your logo?”
It’s partly because our films are outspoken, but it also reflects the Hot Docs experience: one that fosters feedback, initiates discussion and sparks debate around documentaries. This happens amongst audience members waiting in line, during our filmmaker Q&As, between directors and Docs for Schools students, and in cafes and bars after the screenings. Our audience wants to express their opinions about the films they see, and this is why the People’s Choice Award has been so popular for over 10 years.
With 189 amazing films at the 2012 Festival, there is something for everyone. Tens of thousands of votes will be cast, but only one film will capture the minds, hearts and imaginations of you, our audience, and be named the People’s Choice Award winner.
Since the award is crowd-selected, we think it is only fitting the prize be crowd-funded. This is your chance to tell filmmakers how much their work means to you and give their project a boost.
