October’s Doc Soup!
D: Mark Grieco | Colombia, USA | 2014 | 87 min | Toronto Premiere
Winnner—2014 Candescent Award presented at Sundance Film Festival
From executive producer Mark Achbar (THE CORPORATION)
In 2006 the Colombian government invited foreign investment into one of its historic mining regions, which quickly became the focal point of a global gold rush. Sitting atop $20 billion in gold is Marmato, a small mining town with over 500 years of history and 8000 inhabitants who face displacement by an open-pit mining project. Filmed over six years, MARMATO is the vivid story of these townspeople who employ increasingly dangerous survival tactics and defiant acts of resistance to save their town from the Canadian mining company that wants the gold beneath their homes.
Director Mark Grieco will be in attendance for post-screening discussions.
Presented with the participation of Amnesty International REEL AWARENESS Human Rights Film Festival.

November’s Doc Soup!
LAST DAYS IN VIETNAM
D: Rory Kennedy | USA | 2014 | 98 min | Canadian Premiere
Official Selection, Sundance 2014
Award-winning director Rory Kennedy takes a stunning look at the chaotic final days of the Vietnam War. As the North Vietnamese Army closes in on Saigon and a Communist victory becomes inevitable, the small number of American diplomats and military operatives still in the country prepare to withdraw. With no prospect of an official evacuation of South Vietnamese, they are faced with a difficult choice: obey White House orders to only evacuate US citizens or risk treason charges to try and save their South Vietnamese allies, friends and families from certain imprisonment and possible death. With the clock ticking and the city under fire, a number of heroic Americans take matters into their own hands, engaging in unsanctioned and often makeshift operations in a desperate effort to save as many lives as possible.
