Because We Were Born
90 minutes | France Brazil | Portuguese | Rating: 18A
Teenagers Nego and Cocada meet every day at a petrol station near their favela in Pernambuco, in Brazil, where they try to make a little money. Cocada, whose father was assassinated, dreams of becoming a truck driver while he carries out a series of menial tasks. Nego lives from hand to mouth with his mother and nine siblings, which is why he helps them eke out a living, leaving him little time for school. Sacrificing their childhood in order to support themselves and their families, the two boys are a world away from the people with whom they interact at the petrol station. Both of them believe, however, that they will be able to fulfill their dreams.
