Beyond Ipanema
From Bahia to Rio, from New York to Tokyo, this electrifying sonic journey explores the innovation and influence of Brazilian music around the globe. Brazilian music is a reflection of the country’s immense diversity and has influenced an array of genres. Through an eclectic series of clips illuminating Brazil’s rich cultural roots, this tapestry explores Brazil’s first cultural export—Carmen Miranda—in the 1930s; the father of bossa nova, João Gilberto, and his wife Astrud; the impact of Black Orpheus and Afro-Brazilian heritage; the rebellious Tropicália movement; the sizzling samba; trip hop and trance. Featuring interviews with an impressive roster of artists including David Byrne, M.I.A., Devendra Banhardt, Gilberto Gil, Tom Zé, and Os Mutantes, Beyond Ipanema celebrates Brazil’s mélange of styles and sounds as an essential innovative spark for generations to come. - Karina Rotenstein
