Enemies of the People
94 minutes | Cambodia Great Britain | Khmer | Canadian Premiere | Rating: 14A
This riveting and inspirational film follows co-director and investigative journalist Thet Sambath’s 10-year journey to befriend the men and women responsible for Cambodia’s Killing Fields in an effort to come to terms with his own family’s death at the hands of the Khmer Rouge. Sambath obtains groundbreaking accounts from the notorious Brother Number Two—Pol Pot’s second in command—who now lives in peaceful seclusion with his family. He also hears from the grassroots killers—the men and women who were simply following orders. His research and efforts result in a new and terrifying explanation for the genocide, but the truth comes at a painful price. Can Sambath forgive and move on? Winner of Sundance’s World Cinema Special Jury Prize for Documentary. - Shannon Abel
