My Thai Bride
54 minutes | Australia | North American Premiere | Rating: PG
HOT DOCS 2012 WINNER - BEST MID-LENGTH DOCUMENTARY
Ted Rees is a middle-aged man with thin hair and a thick middle. Back home in Wales, young attractive women are, in his words, “priced out of my market.” But in Thailand he’s free to enjoy the company of the alluring women who work in the bars of Bangkok. There he meets Tip, who looks like she’d be a good wife. Pretty and petite, she helps him with his business by buying cheap Thai goods, and she doesn’t take advantage. So Ted and Tip get married. He sells his assets back home and the two start a life in Tip’s village. They build a big house and a pig farm, all financed by Ted but in Tip’s name since foreigners are not allowed to own property in Thailand. Tip is a happy pig farmer while Ted lives in semi-retirement. But now that Tip has control of the finances, does she have any use for Ted?
