Open Secret
Filmmaker Steve Lickteig grew up knowing he was adopted. For 18 years, he enjoyed life on his family’s Kansas farm with eight brothers and sisters, all the biological children of his adoptive parents, Don and Mary Jane. But on the eve of his high school graduation, all of these “facts” change in an instant. He isn’t the child of an anonymous woman after all, but of someone much closer to home. Stranger still, his entire town has known who he really was all along. Why would a family hide something that could be exposed by anyone at anytime? And how do the stunning details of his past change the filmmaker’s image of his parents and himself? Armed with a camera and the need to learn the whole truth, Lickteig sets out to document all the surprising twists of his real-life story in this captivating family memoir. Myrocia Watamaniuk
