Poster Girl
With a pretty face and feisty attitude, Robynn Murray, a cheerleader turned soldier, was an ideal cover girl for Army Magazine’s Women in Combat issue. Upon returning home from deployment in Iraq, however, Murray found the dubious honour a heavy burden. As it did so many of her veteran peers, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder debilitated this once vibrant young woman. In her Oscar-nominated directorial debut, Sara Nesson follows Murray’s two-year battle with depression, medication, rage and redemption as she navigates the frustrating bureaucracy of Veterans Affairs and wrestles the demons of war that relentlessly haunt her. Murray’s anguish is intensely revealed through Nesson’s raw and emotional film. The intimate access to the journey of a single soldier brings the collective plight of Murray’s fellow vets into sharp focus. Lynne Crocker
