Sins of My Father
Sebastián Marroquín was 16 when his father, drug lord Pablo Escobar, was killed. Forced to relocate to Argentina under a new identity, Marroquín has struggled to reconcile the complex and conflicting images he carries of Escobar—devoted father, modern-day Robin Hood, ruthless murderer. Now, 16 years later, Sins of My Father follows Marroquín as he sets forth on an epic journey back to his homeland, where he will apologize to the sons of two of his father’s murder victims. His journey is both a genuine attempt to reconcile and a symbolic gesture to inspire a new generation. This riveting documentary combines a moving contemporary drama with extraordinary archives, featuring hitherto unseen home movies of Escobar’s bizarre and extravagant life. The result is a humane and complex narrative, both a universal story of a generation burdened by its forebears, and a compelling new portrait of one of the world’s most iconic criminals. - Monika Wagenberg
