With a population of just 10,000 and a tourist industry worth $3 billion a year, Branson, Missouri, is the unlikely Broadway of the Midwest. But after decades of a booming industry of wholesome vaudeville and musical acts, Branson confronts a series of cultural changes. First, a steady economic downturn slows tourism to a trickle and halts the town’s growth, threatening the livelihood of its citizens. Social transformations are also challenging Branson as a traditional Ozark town. AJ Schnack and David Wilson’s film penetrates the community’s kitschy veneer to reveal a complicated ecology of American life: a gay father struggles to be honest while protecting his sons, a single mother navigates demanding performance schedules to make a precarious living, a mayor does everything she can keep her town from falling into insolvency. We Always Lie to Strangers is a rare masterpiece, where individual portraits contribute to a moving tapestry of small town life. Eli Horwatt
