Welcome to the Machine
86 minutes | USA | International Premiere | Rating: PG
Director Avi Weider’s triplets, conceived with the aid of in vitro fertilization, were born premature and spent the first year of their lives struggling to survive in a high-tech neonatal unit. Seeing the babies as products of modern technology, dependent on machines for their very lives, sent the new father into an existential crisis about the modern relationship between humans and machines. Welcome to the Machine weaves the filmmaker’s own journey with stories from futurists, scientists, anti-technology advocates, army pilots in training, a man implanted with an artificial retina and even the “Unabomber” to construct a thought-provoking theological and philosophical exploration of what it means to be human in an age of rapid technological advancement.
