Canadian Broadcast Platforms 2016: Bell Media and HBO

Hot Docs Jots' New Canadian Platforms monthly series highlights new opportunities for Canadian filmmakers in the Canadian broadcast landscape. This month we welcome Corrie Coe, Senior Vice-President, Independent Production at Bell Media to discuss Bell Media’s new partnership with HBO and the original production development program to be operated by Bell Media and HBO, to co-develop original and factual productions for international distribution.

Hot Docs: What does this deal mean for content creators with programming on or one day launch on HBO? What kind of Canadian broadcast and digital exposure will they get?

CC: Our programming is supported with multi-platform marketing that spans on-air promos, digital ads and social media executions representing the reach of Bell Media’s industry-leading radio, television, digital, and out of home properties. As well, publicity campaigns are a mounted for each program resulting in coverage both nationally and locally in print, on television and radio, and online. Occasionally, when talent is available to us, publicity campaigns are bolstered with talent media junkets.

HD: When will you be accepting development proposals? 

CC: Any time, we accept development proposals 12 months of the year. 

HD: What level of project development do you want to see from content creators?

CC: We accept proposals at all phases of development – from idea, to treatment, to projects that already have a little footage shot.  There are no strict rules to our submission process.

HD: What kind of factual content will you be looking for? 

CC: We will be looking for high quality factual content in line with the factual programming featured in the HBO library.  Primarily we would be looking for feature length one-off documentaries such as NOTHING LEFT UNSAID but we are open to pitches for doc series such as THE JINX.

HD: How are you working with Canadian producers/production companies to develop content

CC: We are involved in all stages of development, collaborating with the director/producer at every phase of the development process.  Each project is unique and we give support and feedback according to the needs of each project.

HD: Will you be looking for projects to co-develop with HBO at Hot Docs 2016 in May?

CC: We are always looking for projects and are excited about being at Hot Docs in 2016. We will certainly be keeping our eyes open for projects while we are attending The Forum.
