Hot Docs is pleased to offer two publications in our portfolio of online resources for documentary professionals: Doc Speak and the Guide to Training Opportunities in Canada for Documentary Film. Both publications serve as great starting points for emerging filmmakers and mid-career doc-makers to gain insight into and practical information on the industry.
Doc Speak features in-depth interviews revealing filmmakers’ personal insights surrounding both the art and business of the craft. Based on a survey of the best practices of accomplished documentary filmmakers, Doc Speak reveals filmmakers’ musings on their roots, motivations and processes, while also providing insight into emerging trends in documentary film. Including commentary from acclaimed filmmakers Mark Achbar, Barbara Barde, Joe Berlinger, Daniel Cross, Ali Kazimi, Emmanuel Laurent, Peter Lynch, Guy Marcuse, Michael McNamara, Nettie Wild and Peter Wintonick, Doc Speak is a testament to the diversity of the field and filmmakers - individual inspirations and experiences.
Hot Docs’ sincere thanks go to the filmmakers who took time out of their busy schedules to share their insights, along with Anya Mckenzie and Madeline Lunney, who researched and prepared both Doc Speak and the Guide to Training Opportunities in Canada for Documentary Film. We are also grateful for the ongoing support of The Ministry of Training, Universities and Colleges, who made this work possible.
