HOT DOCS PRESENTS WORLD PRESS PHOTO 09

DOCUMENTARY FESTIVAL LAUNCHES FALL SEASON WITH PRESTIGIOUS PHOTOJOURNALISM EXHIBITION

Toronto, August 25, 2009 – Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival is pleased to announce that it will be presenting the prestigious World Press Photo 09 exhibition from October 6-24 at the Allen Lambert Galleria in Brookfield Place, 181 Bay Street.

The exhibition features the prize winners of the World Press Photo Foundation’s annual worldwide photojournalism contest. Each February, an independent jury of 13 experts, selected from photojournalists, agencies and magazines from around the world, gather in Amsterdam to select the winning images in 10 categories. This year, a record number of participants, 5508 photographers representing 124 nationalities, submitted a total of 96,268 images for consideration. The best of these submissions – 196 photographs – will be on display in the exhibit.

“We leapt at the opportunity to present this remarkable exhibition,” say Hot Docs’ executive director Chris McDonald. “By bringing World Press Photo 09 to Toronto we can help exhibit a different type of documentary media to our audiences and help foster a wider understanding and appreciation of the genre. Like documentary film, these photos communicate the way we see our world, each other and ourselves.”

This year will mark the eighth consecutive year that the World Press Photo exhibition has been presented in Toronto. It has become one of the city’s most popular fall events with tens of thousands of people viewing it each year, including thousands of high school students. In 2008, 83 schools arranged for class trips to the exhibition. Preparations are underway for a number of special events and screenings related to World Press 09 for both students and the general public. Details will be announced at a future date.

A representative from World Press Photo in Amsterdam will be in Toronto for the opening of the exhibition and will be available for interviews.
