MARCH’S DOC SOUP GIVES AN INSIDER’S LOOK AT THE NEW YORK ART SCENE WITH GUEST OF CINDY SHERMAN

Director Paul H-O in attendance

For Immediate Release

Toronto, February 11, 2009 – Hot Docs is pleased to present GUEST OF CINDY SHERMAN (D: Paul H-O and Tom Donahue, USA) as the Toronto Doc Soup selection for March. An official selection of the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival, GUEST OF CINDY SHERMAN offers a first-hand glimpse into both the reclusive life of renowned photographer Sherman and the New York art scene as a whole. GUEST OF CINDY SHERMAN screens on Wednesday, March 11, at 6:30 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. at the Bloor Cinema, 506 Bloor Street West. Director Paul H-O will be in attendance for a post-screening Q&A.

Described as “sweet, disturbing, awkward, and romantic all at once” by Elle Magazine, this humorous, rollercoaster ride of a documentary tells the story of an artist-turned-cable-access arts reporter (H-O) and his experience inside New York’s visual arts scene. Filmed over the course of 15 years, GUEST OF CINDY SHERMAN intertwines candid interviews with famous New Yorkers of the 1980s (such as Roberta Smith, Ingrid Sischy, John Waters, Robert Longo, Carol Kane, David Furnish, Danny DeVito and Molly Ringwald) with the unfolding love story of Sherman and H-O.

The romance is short-lived as H-O begins to struggle with his life as Sherman’s faceless “plus one” at many of New York’s premiere art events. He attempts to cope with this fall into anonymity, all the while exploring the absurd, money-driven, over-the-top aspects of the Manhattan art scene. The result is a documentary that gives uncensored insight into an exclusive world, while exploring the pressures that fame imparts on romance.

The Doc Soup monthly screening series brings the latest Canadian and international documentaries to the big screen in Calgary, Toronto and Vancouver. Single tickets for GUEST OF CINDY SHERMAN are $12 and can be purchased in advance at www.hotdocs.ca or at the door on the night of the screening (subject to availability). A limited number of free tickets for the 9:15 p.m. screening will be available to students with proper ID (subject to availability) at the door, on a first-come first-served basis beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Upcoming screening dates for Toronto’s Doc Soup are March 11 and April 15. Doc Soup titles are announced at least one month prior to their screenings and, whenever possible, guest directors are in attendance.

Hot Docs is pleased to acknowledge Citytv as the Presenting Partner of the Doc Soup series.
