Toronto, February 23, 2010 - Hot Docs is pleased to announce that the March installment of the Doc Soup monthly screening series will feature GARBAGE DREAMS (USA, 79 MIN) by filmmaker Mai Iskander, who will be in attendance to introduce the screenings and answer questions from the audience. An official selection of the SXSW and IDFA film festivals, winner of 18 awards, and shortlisted for a Best Documentary Feature Academy Award, GARBAGE DREAMS has been called “an evocative examination of the clash between tradition and modernism” by The Hollywood Reporter. GARBAGE DREAMS will screen on Wednesday, March 17, at 6:30 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. at the Bloor Cinema, 506 Bloor Street West.

Filmed over the course of four years, GARBAGE DREAMS follows three teenage boys born into the trash trade and growing up in the world’s largest garbage village, on the outskirts of Cairo. It is the home to 60,000 Zaballeen, Arabic for “garbage people.” For generations, the people of Cairo have depended on the Zaballeen to collect their trash, paying them only a minimal amount for their services. Far ahead of any modern “green” initiatives, the Zaballeen survive by recycling 80 per cent of the garbage they collect. When their community is suddenly faced with the globalization of its trade at the hands of a multinational garbage disposal company, each boy is forced to make choices that will impact his future and the survival of his community.

The Doc Soup monthly screening series brings the latest Canadian and international documentaries to the big screen in Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. Single tickets for GARBAGE DREAMS are $12 and can be purchased in advance at or at the door on the night of the screening (subject to availability). A limited number of free tickets for the 9:15 p.m. screening will be available to students with proper ID (subject to availability) at the door, on a first-come first-served basis beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The final installment of Toronto’s Doc Soup 2009-10 season will take place on April 14. Doc Soup titles are announced at least one month prior to their screenings and, whenever possible, guest directors are in attendance.

Hot Docs is pleased to acknowledge Citytv as the Presenting Partner of the Doc Soup series.
