Moderators

AJ Schnack - Filmmaker/Writer, Cinema Eye Honors

AJ SCHNACK (Director/Producer/Photographer/Editor) is a filmmaker and writer based in Los Angeles. His films include the ensemble documentary, CONVENTION (2009), KURT COBAIN ABOUT A SON (2006) and GIGANTIC (A TALE OF TWO JOHNS) (2002). He is currently on post-production on WE ALWAYS LIE TO STRANGERS, a documentary about the Ozark Mountain music show town, Branson, Missouri and is producing THE ART OF MAKING MONEY for director Nathan Truesdell. He is an Independent Spirit Award nominee and was the first recipient of AFI Silverdocs’ Cinematic Vision Award. Schnack is the founder and co-chair of the Cinema Eye Honors for Nonfiction Filmmaking and the author and editor of the popular nonfiction film blog All these wonderful things (http://edendale.typepad.com).

Panelists

Katherine Fairfax Wright - Director, CALL ME KUCHU

Katherine Fairfax Wright graduated from Columbia University with a double major in Film Studies and Anthopology. She produced Gabi On The Roof In July, which premiered at Cinequest 2010, and won Best Narrative Feature and Best Actress at the Brooklyn Film Festival. Weaned on a school of vérité filmmakers, Wright has worked closely with Bent-Jorgen Perlmutt, Nelson Walker III, and Fellipe Barbosa. She associate-produced Perlmutt and Walker’s award-winning documentary Lumo, which aired on P.O.V. and won the 2007 Student Academy Award, as well as Perlmutt’s Les Vulnerables, the closing short at the New York Film Festival 2007. Wright has worked in a producing role on several other films and she is an award-winning photographer. She is a Chaz & Roger Ebert Directing Fellow, and an alumnus of the Film Independent Documentary Lab and the Garrett Scott Documentary Development Grant at Full Frame Documentary Film Festival.

Jeff Orlowski - Director, CHASING ICE

Chasing Ice is directed by Jeff Orlowski, cinematographer for the Extreme Ice Survey, and an award-winning filmmaker. A graduate of Stanford University, he has been working with Balog since 2007 and has shot over 300 hours of footage of EIS in the field. His work for EIS has screened on NBC, CNN, PBS, National Geographic, and hundreds of other venues around the world, including a multi-year installation at the Denver International Airport.
