2010 Doc It! Selections

Hot Docs presented the fourth annual Doc It! Showcase on Saturday, May 8, at 11:30 am at the ROM Theatre. A program of young people’s films reflecting their interests, perspectives, and artistic choices as they explore their world through non-fiction filmmaking. Doc It! 2010 presented nine outstanding films made by Canadian youth between 14 and 18 years of age. The films were selected by a jury and the award-winning film, SKIPPING STONE: A DOCUMENTARY, was announced during the screening.

4 FOR THE FUTURE
D: Dylan Dyson│Canada│9:58 min
This doc features four high school students from London, Ontario who travel to Italy to take part in the J8 and G8 summits in the summer of 2009. The film follows the students’ journey, submitting their entry, participation, and experiences.

BEING PARKOUR
D: Hamish Lambert│Canada│5:16 min
Parkour is often defined as “the art of movement.” For many, however, parkour is more than just a sport—it’s a way of life. BEING PARKOUR explores what the activity means to members of the Halifax Parkour Community.

FOOD FIGHT
D: Savannah O'Leary│Canada│9:26 min
Exploring the concept of genetically modified foods, the documentary discusses the controversy surrounding this new scientific practice.

GAME ON
D: Jonathan Andrade│Canada│8:33 min
Two Grade 10 boys unite to prove their teacher wrong. When, due to late-night gaming, the boys start missing classes and falling behind on their documentary assignment (ironically titled Video Game Addiction), their teacher challenges them to give up video games for two weeks.

GOING FOR GOLD
D: Peter and Julien Locke│Canada│5:12 min
Made for the Olympic torch relay in Nelson, British Columbia, the film features three 10- and 11-year-old athletes in biathlon, figure skating, and downhill ski racing. The youths talk about challenges with their sports and why they want to compete in the Olympics.

MY GRANDMOTHER'S SUITCASE
D: Riley Weyman│Canada│10:43 min
The film follows Vanna Weyman through an exploration of the photos she finds in her mother’s suitcase. Through the photos, we watch as Vanna tells the story of her unusual upbringing and sheds light on what it’s like getting old.

SHIZOKA-PEACEFUL
D: Kaelan Doyle-Myerscough│Canada│4:13 min
An inside look at Sanko, the popular family-owned Japanese grocery store on Queen Street West in Toronto. The film focuses on the store’s peaceful atmosphere and family bonds. The filmmaker, in voice-over, reflects on these in relation to her own life and experiences.

SKIPPING STONE: A DOCUMENTARY
D: Laura Orozco, Shaya Mulcahy│Canada│9:58 min
Skipping Stone is the story of a family as they come to terms with having a parent with an acquired brain injury. It’s filmed from the point of view of a daughter as she watches her father’s recovery process.

STUNTWOOD
D: Chris Johnston│Canada│9:49 min
Stuntwood is a personal film about skateboarding that covers how skateboarding makes the filmmaker feel, how it’s viewed in the community, and how it deserves more recognition as a sport. Includes clips of local skateboarders.
