Combat in a foreign land is not for the weak of heart. This tough little film concentrates on Russian soldiers in Chechnya but it could easily have been made in Afghanistan or Bosnia. After all, a war zone is a war zone. Vérité footage captures the fear and comradeship of the regular armed forces stationed there. In an astonishing scene, Russians kill each other in a tragic case of ‘friendly fire.’ Much of the film is set in a tent where the soldiers make jokes, tell stories and desperately try to maintain their good spirits in a very difficult time and place. Winner of the FIPRESCI Prize at the 2001 International Documentary Filmfestival Amsterdam. Marc Glassman. In Russian with English subtitles.
