“The blues is just a funny feelin’, yet people call it a mighty bad disease.”

After Lightnin’ Hopkins grew tired of the presence of the film crew, it took several games of losing cards to the legendary bluesman for Les Blank to be allowed access to his life and story. Including performances at a black rodeo, an outdoor barbecue and a visit to Hopkins’ hometown of Centerville, Texas, the film weaves a portrait of an incredible musician. With Blank’s incredible intuition for crafting story and capturing iconic imagery, The Blues Accordin’ to Lightnin’ Hopkins is as much a portrait of an incredible character as it is a glimpse into a glorious time gone by. As gifted a storyteller as he is a musician, Hopkins drinks, plays music and spins tales, taking us on a ride through his life and times accompanied by the finest of blues. Charlotte Cook
