In 2007, a video of three tween boys from Brooklyn playing heavy metal in Times Square went viral and their band Unlocking the Truth quickly became a YouTube sensation. While bucking the stigma against black musicians playing heavy metal, Malcolm Brickhouse, Jarad Dawkins and Alec Atkins set out to prove that they were much more than a novelty. After joining forces with a veteran manager, the band’s career rapidly accelerated—signing a $1.8 million contract with Sony and booking major concerts (they became the youngest group ever to play Coachella). But when it came time to sit down and write music, the boys were forced to mature fast, and lead singer Malcolm had to find his own voice. Intimately capturing the private moments of three wildly talented and magnetic young men, Breaking a Monster skillfully illustrates the tension between being a kid amidst the overwhelming demands of the music industry machine.
