In the hills of southeastern Portugal, at the converging-point of two rivers, stands a 400-year-old monastery. In 1980, former prima ballerina Geraldine Zwanikken and her photographer husband Kees relocated to the then-derelict complex with their two sons, Christiaan and Louis. After gradually restoring the buildings, replanting the gardens and breathing life into an ancient irrigation system that delivers water to every corner of the property, the family of eccentric artists now live and work in this enthralling sanctuary. With an acute sensibility that complements his subjects, Jarred Alterman makes use of Christiaan’s kinetic creatures, surrealist encounters in the landscape and a penetrating soundtrack to convey the enchanting atmosphere of this habitat. The resulting film is an absorbing portrait of not only a home, but a place for artistic cultivation and a playground for the spirit. Lisa Plekhanova
