Mark Bilyeus family has lived in the Ozark Mountains of southwestern Missouri for generations. And music, specifically hillbilly music, has been an important part of his familys life for just as long. In the fall of 1996, Mark, his brother Jody Bilyeu, their cousins Jay Williamson and Mike Williamson, and Rik Thomas came together to form Big Smith. Equipped with only an acoustic guitar, mandolin, bass fiddle and washboard, they started playing raucous acoustic music that captured the spirit of their native Ozarks. Recent shows have found them expanding their instrumentation to include electric guitars, piano and drums. The result is a live performance with variety enough to please a diverse audience while keeping their roots firmly planted in the Appalachian gospel and dance music that they grew up on and were inspired by. Set in the magnificent landscape of the Ozarks, Homemade Hillbilly Jam is a beautiful day in the life of these neo-hillbillies who guide us musically through their rich cultural legacy. Shannon Abel
