FAQs: Citizen Minutes

FAQs: Citizen Minutes

Who will own the copyright of the films?

Hot Docs is the commissioner of the films and will own the copyright.

I have a producer I usually work with on my projects. Can I bring them on in the case the project is selected?

The creative co-producers for Citizen Minutes will be the hands-on producers for all the commissioned shorts and Hot Docs is the official producer.

I don’t have a lot of filmmaking experience, but a really great story and access. Or I have a lot of filmmaking experience. Can I apply too?

Absolutely! We value great stories above experience for this project. The producers will assess the unique needs of each production and may be able to pair novice storytellers with a senior mentor storyteller to help support their vision.

What does “civic engagement” look like?

We recommend checking out these websites as you start to shape your Citizen Minutes short or micro doc:

Where will these docs play? Who will watch these?

These docs will be aimed at/geared towards the younger generation and will live online, but may also have a shelf life at festivals including Hot Docs 2021, on streaming platforms, broadcast, and in schools. Citizen Minutes will also feature an educational component, with Hot Docs creating tools for educators and post-secondary institutions inspired by the films to promote interest in civic engagement.

I’m not sure if my idea is more of a microdoc or a short. What should I do?

Get in touch! The most efficient way is to reach out to us at [email protected] and we provide guidance. Our assessment will include evaluating whether your project is a good fit for category you applied under. If the project is shortlisted but we feel it’s better suited to a different category, we will contact you to discuss.

What is the timeline for this project?

We are prioritizing projects that can be shot from December 2020 to February 2021, to be completed for April 2021 (post-production). If you have an idea or subject access that requires a longer timeframe, we encourage you to still apply as we may consider a longer delivery in special circumstances.

How do you assess feasibility with regards to the COVID-19 crisis?

While we are looking for projects that can be shot from December 2020 to February 2021, we understand that the intended production schedule may be outside the control of the team(s) and producers due to COVID-19. We will monitor the health and safety measures of the intended shooting regions and encourage all productions to look through DOC Canada’s COVID-19 guide for filmmakers and encourage them to outline how the team plans to address their unique production needs safely.
