CrossCurrents Doc Fund Short/Interactive Stream Awards $10,000 to FOR VENIDA, FOR KALIEF

Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival and the R&M Lang Foundation are pleased to announce that For Venida, For Kalief (D: Sisa Bueno, USA) has been chosen to receive a $10,000 CAD production grant from the CrossCurrents International Doc Fund short/interactive strand in its seventh round of disbursements. The CrossCurrents Doc Fund was established in November of 2013 by the R&M Lang Foundation, and aims to support short, interactive and experimental documentaries from emerging filmmakers working within communities whose perspectives have been historically underrepresented or marginalized.

“We’re very excited to support Sisa’s poetic film, told from an incredibly personal and poignant place, about injustice,” said Heidi Tao Yang, industry funds manager for Hot Docs. “We can’t wait to see her develop her unique vision on screen, and we look forward to welcoming her at Hot Docs for the fellowship.”

“There were so many fantastic entries this year, but ultimately we chose For Venida, For Kalief as the recipient of this doc fund this year,” said Robert Lang, Toronto-based documentary filmmaker and chair of the R&M Lang Foundation. “A passionate plea for criminal justice reform inspired by painfully tragic true events, we’re proud to be able to support this important film that will hopefully open our eyes to rampant systemic racism and injustice.”

The CrossCurrents International Doc Fund was generously established by the R&M Lang Foundation and is administered by Hot Docs. Each year, the Fund provides one successful applicant with a grant of $10,000. In addition to this grant, director Sisa Bueno will receive a Hot Docs Fellowship, which includes travel, accommodation, and accreditation to the annual Hot Docs Festival and enrolment in the Doc Accelerator program and mentorship initiatives.

Eligible projects were considered by the CrossCurrents International Doc Fund short/interactive strand selection committee: Robert Lang (president and executive producer, Kensington Communications), Shasha Nakhai (filmmaker, Compy Films), Elizabeth Radshaw (Industry Programs Director, Hot Docs) and Heidi Tao Yang (Industry Funds Manager, Hot Docs).
