First Projects Co-Financed Through Hot Docs Partners Announced

Hot Docs is pleased to announce the first two projects to receive co-financing through the Hot Docs Partners initiative. Launched at the 2018 Hot Docs Festival, Hot Docs Partners is a $2.6-million CDN financing initiative that connects a select group of committed investors with Canadian and international feature-length documentary productions seeking financing.

Hot Docs Partners is pleased to announce its support for Influence, a production of StoryScope (South Africa), Chronicle Productions (South Africa) and Eyesteelfilm (Canada), directed by Richard Poplak and Diana Neille. From the journalists who exposed Bell Pottinger—the world’s most notorious reputation management firm—comes a globetrotting investigation into the architects behind the “democracy industrial complex” and the dark art of geopolitical spin-doctoring.

Hot Docs Partners is also pleased to join SODEC and Canadian Media Fund in supporting Loaded Pictures’s (Canada) We Are Here, a CBC and Canal D documentary focused on the community left behind after the Quebec Mosque shooting. We Are Here is an original production directed and written by Ariel Nasr and produced by Sergeo Kirby.

Led by industry programs director Elizabeth Radshaw, Hot Docs Partners employs the organization’s expertise developed though operating its highly effective market programs, including the Hot Docs Forum and Hot Docs Deal Maker, and its $9-million CDN production fund portfolio, as well as the relationships it has cultivated with documentary filmmakers around the world, to assess and match films in development or production seeking capital with appropriate investors.

The Hot Docs’ industry team evaluates, shortlists and recommends projects to Hot Docs Partners investors based on their individual investment priorities. Hot Docs then works with filmmakers to support successful film completion, release and distribution. Toronto-based Blue Ice Docs is a lead investor in Hot Docs Partners having committed to matching investments made by other partners on a project by project basis.
