    Director:
  • Doug Block

Official Selection—Hot Docs 2014

WATCH FULL FILM

Filmmaker Doug Block (51 Birch Street) has been working on the side as a wedding videographer for nearly 20 years. In that time, he has accumulated hundreds of hours of personal memories, ones that belong to people he only knew for a short time, when their love was new and energetic. Now, on the eve of his own 25th wedding anniversary, Block decides to revisit these couples and complete their stories, asking the difficult questions of what makes a marriage work. Contrasting the subjects’ original precious moments with modern interviews and some insight from counsellors specializing in nuptials, 112 Weddings draws a vibrant picture of the relationships that couldn’t sustain themselves and the ones that seem destined to last forever. Exploring the true meaning of commitment, Block feeds his curiosity with these emotional journeys 20 years in the making.

Advanced Style examines the lives of seven unique New Yorkers whose eclectic personal style and vital spirit have guided their approach to aging. Based on Ari Seth Cohen’s famed blog of the same name, this inspirational film paints intimate and colourful portraits of independent, stylish women aged 62 to 95 who are challenging conventional ideas about beauty, aging, and Western’s culture’s increasing obsession with youth. Filled with vitality, each vignette bursts with life and humour. Like the mantra for its characters, Plioplyte’s affirming documentary reminds us that age is just a number and beauty is forever.

Blurred Lines

Blurred Lines: Inside the Art World

  • Canada

  • PG
    Director:
WATCH FULL FILM

This Hot Docs hit is an all-access pass into the contemporary art world. Modern art pieces from established names can go for what seems like absurd amounts of money, accessible only to the elite. Assessing the value of a work of art in both cultural and monetary terms is tricky territory that calls into question what we view and accept as art to begin with and how we commodify said value in our capitalist society. Filmmaker Barry Avrich takes you around the globe to auctions, museums, art openings and talks to experts and the artists themselves about this unregulated economic system and what it reveals.

Last Mogul

The Last Mogul: The Life and Times of Lew Wasserman

  • Canada
  • 110
  • PG
    Director:
  • Barry Avrich
WATCH FULL FILM

Lew Wasserman has been credited with creating—and later dismantling—Hollywood’s studio system in a near-mythic career spanning more than six decades. A story worthy of a Hollywood movie itself, Wasserman began his unlikely career by booking music for mob-controlled night clubs, only to go on to become a power agent and, eventually, a studio mogul. His innovative and controversial practice of “packaging” talent together and giving actors profit-participation became renowned in the industry as a negotiating tactic, as did his ability to leverage political influence in the corridors of power. With candid interviews with Wasserman’s friends and adversaries, movie stars and politicians, a striking portrait emerges of how Wasserman’s fierce business skills—and unpredictably generous and vengeful temperaments—led to the rise and fall of a corporate film empire.
