Docs For Schools at Home

As school is out, or more precisely moved into the home, our popular Docs For Schools program is pleased to curate a variety of free, online documentary films for middle and high school–aged students.

The selected films will show our world in inspiring and informative ways. A few resources will accompany the films to assist with ideas for discussion or assignments.

Whether you are a parent/guardian or a teacher using the material, we encourage you to pre-screen the films before sharing with your children or students.

If you have any questions or film recommendations, please contact Education and Youth Programs Manager Lesley Sparks at [email protected].

Video Postcard from Home

DFS asked students to send us a Video Postcard From Home during our COVID-19 quarantine time. We are happy to share 10 of the submissions.

A popular doc from both Hot Docs and the Docs For Schools Festival program from 2010, and it is still relevant. The Halliburton—developed technology of "fracking" or hydraulic fracturing has unlocked a "Saudia Arabia of natural gas" across the United States and now in parts of Canada. When filmmaker Josh Fox is approached to lease his Pennsylvania farmland for drilling, he almost takes the money. But after asking a few questions, he unwittingly stumbles into an environmental disaster. Residents from north to south report contaminated wells, mysterious ailments, and even combustible water straight from the tap. Fox blends terrifying facts of corporate cover—ups and governmental atrophy with a personal and refreshingly absurd take on fracking.
